John Wesley was the son of an Anglican priest and was almost certainly destined for a clerical career, while George Whitefield was the son of a Gloucester publican and had witnessed the sins of humanity first hand. Letters written by Wesley to Whitefield show that the traditional founder of Methodism was not always Christ like in his approach, while Whitefield appears to be the most humble and Christian of the two men.

Today derelict buildings pay tribute to the sacrifice made by this Dorset village.
